How Does Hypnosis Work?
During hypnosis a person learns to relax to the point where their body and conscious mind are totally relaxed yet the subconscious mind is very alert. In this state it is possible for the individual to examine their own motivation and to accept new ideas.
We remember everything that happens to us and learn from it. Our brains file away the original physical and emotional reactions that occurred. Each time similar events occur again, the physical and emotional reactions attached to the memory are repeated. These reactions might be inappropriate or unhealthy. In hypnotherapy, I will guide you to remember the event that led to the first reaction, separate the memory from the learned behaviour, and reconstruct the event with new, healthier associations.
CAN ANYONE BE HYPNOTIZED?
The short answer is YES! However you must have the following:
1. You must want to be hypnotized, (no one can hypnotize you against your will).
2. You must not have any fears or misconceptions about hypnosis or how it works.
Hypnosis is a natural state of mind. You enter into some form of hypnosis several times every day. Perhaps you can remember a time when you drove home and later realized you could not remember anything about the journey this is an example of a naturally occurring trance.
CAN HYPNOSIS HURT YOU?
No, hypnosis has been used, in the modern sense, clinically for around 200 years (there is even evidence of the ancient Egyptians using hypnosis 3,000 years ago in their sleep clinics) and there is no documented record of anyone being harmed by hypnosis. Forget what you see in films, it can only be used for good. No matter how deep a trance you are in, if it were suggested that you should do anything that was against your normal moral values you would instantly bring yourself out of trance.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING A SESSION WITH A HYPNOTHERAPIST?
During your initial session you will be asked questions not only about the problem you are seeking help with but also about your medical history.
You will be given a thorough explanation of how hypnosis works.
Once both you and the therapist are happy to proceed you will be directed through relaxation techniques with a series of mental images as you take yourself into trance.
You will be directed via mental imagery and suggestions to help you to change behaviours and alleviate symptoms.
You will be taught the basics of self-hypnosis which will enable you to recreate the feelings that were experienced during the session and reinforce the learning on your own.
